The Military International HIV Training Program (MIHTP) is a collaboration of the Naval Medical Center, San Diego (NMCSD) and two San Diego universities - the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU). The Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) provides operational support through the DOD HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP).

MIHTP is funded by the US Department of Defense as an international assistance program, and is designed to promote HIV prevention through training of military medical providers and country assistance in strengthening or development and implementation of HIV prevention programs.

An effective response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic requires expertise, experience and training in the prevention and management of people infected with HIV. This program was established to use the HIV expertise in three closely associated San Diego institutions.

We provide training of medical military personnel actively caring for HIV-infected patients. Supporting prevention and treatment programs in military forces of countries requesting our assistance, we provide clinical training in HIV-related patient management, epidemiology, and public health. Beyond the San Diego-based training course, supporting projects in trainees’ home countries have been beneficial.
